No-one On Their Death Bed …

This is a fairly well known quote by the late Stephen Covey, author of  “The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People” and many other great personal development books. If you have never read this book, we highly recommend that you do. If you have, but not read it for a while, we suggest you review it again.

Covey’s quote is so true and yet why is it that many business owners get so caught up in the day to day running of their business that they sacrifice other very important areas of life, such as health and wellbeing, family and home, personal development and learning, financial security, community and so on and so on.

Often it is because the business owner is operating in survival mode. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, we will always address ‘survival needs’ before the others. For example, if the room you are sitting in now suddenly caught fire, you would loose all interest in this article and hightail it out of there!

In my Advanced Mentoring Groups (AMGs) we work with business owners to help them separate themselves from their business so that they can have a life and a sale-able business. A business should be a vehicle to create the lifestyle the business owner wants and deserves, and an asset that they can sell. Work to live don’t live for work.

So how can a business owner shift from survival?

Join an AMG group and get both group mentoring and individual mentoring. Implement great systems in all areas of the business: operations, finance, sales and marketing, governance, selection and recruitment, training etc. Then train other people to follow the systems. As Ray Kroc (of McDonald’s fame) is alleged to have said “If you have intelligent systems, you don’t need intelligent people.”

It makes recruitment easier and the team get up to speed much quicker. With great systems you Save Your Self Time Energy Money and Stress. All very well worth having.
